PUNIQUE is excited to unveil its latest collaboration with Brightsparks Multiple Intelligence School, Inc., through the project Punihan ang Kinabukasan: A Heritage Art Project for the Modern Generation. This initiative reflects our unwavering dedication to preserving and innovating the traditional Filipino art of puni weaving while inspiring a new generation to connect with and celebrate our cultural heritage.
One of PUNIQUE’s core advocacies is the preservation, sharing, and evolution of puni, a traditional art form that transforms palm leaves into intricate and meaningful designs. We firmly believe that every leaf tells a story—a story of creativity, tradition, and Filipino ingenuity. Through this project, we hope to ensure that this narrative continues to flourish and resonate with our youth, fostering an appreciation for the timeless beauty of our heritage.
The project brought together students from Brightsparks Multiple Intelligence School and the skilled weavers of PUNIQUE, led by our esteemed Master Artisan, Gigi Garcia. With passion and dedication, our Puniquera team guided the students through the basics of puni weaving, teaching them to create foundational forms such as Butil (grain), Isda (fish), and Kris (traditional sword). These forms, while simple, carry profound cultural significance and serve as a gateway to mastering more intricate designs.
Beyond the weaving sessions, the project also served as a platform for cultural exchange, where students not only honed their creative skills but also gained a deeper understanding of the historical and symbolic importance of puni in Filipino tradition. By engaging the younger generation, we aim to spark their curiosity and passion for preserving this craft, ensuring that it remains vibrant and relevant in the modern world.
